My Personality Made Me Do It

This week I want to address the other part of what I said last week about personalities: using one’s personality quiz results as an excuse for poor behavior or worse. I believe our personalities are a gift from God, but in our fallen world sin has corrupted what that gift looks like and how we use it.
There are several popular personality quizzes out there, and I do not believe they are all made equally. Some of them have been created in a way that makes them evil, and others are not a full scope of what makes up a personality. But regardless of the quiz, it is not an excuse for poor behavior or sin. I would strongly suggest weighing the usefulness of a quiz by its ability to help you view the world through the correct lens.
As christians we should seek to be Christ-like, and that is our lens. A quiz that provides excuses for poor attitudes, actions, and even points you to worldly idols isn’t the right lens. That is self-serving. A quiz that offers a look at your struggles from a personality standpoint and offers solutions that help you get out of any corrupt habits and behaviors would be a better way to go. This quiz may provide solutions to working through difficult relationship issues and generally guide you to becoming a healthier person.
At the end of the day, personality quizzes can only see so much. They do not know our heart and our soul. God does see us, and He is our Creator. He will give answers when we ask Him. He may choose to use a personality quiz or He may guide through Bible study or a close friend. Go to Him first.
Take a moment to read Psalm 139 to remember how much God knows and loves you.
